Student Literacy Goal Setting and Self-Assessment in the Reading Classroom

Student literacy goal setting and reflection is a powerful tool for the classroom. Through using student self-assessment as a way to pre-assess student understanding of various topics in literacy, the teacher can help guide students in recognizing where students are in their literacy learning.

Teachers can help students become more actively engaged in the learning process through goal setting. Telling students key ideas and vocabulary to learn, asking students what they currently know and would like to learn, helps students to become a more active participant in their own learning.

Asking students to check off what they already know and then having them check what book genres they have already read gets students more actively engaged in their own learning.

Providing prewritten sample goals, provides a structure for the students to come up with their own learning goals for each area of literacy.

FYI: I only endorse things that I've personally used or have come highly recommended from my teacher friends and family and think they may be helpful to you. If you buy anything mentioned using my Amazon referral links, I may get a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Finally students are given a checklist of academic behaviors to help meet their own goals. This helps to make what is seemingly an invisible process of learning more visible for students through specific strategies for planning, monitoring and evaluating their own learning.
